'Green road tax' will affect over nine million drivers, who will face tax increases of over £245 under the Government's 'green car tax' plans.

Cars registered between March 2001 and March 2006 cost a maximum of £210 for a year's road tax, but from April 2010, when the Government expects 21.9 million cars to be on the road, the rate will be up to £455 for cars such as Range Rovers and people carriers.

'Green road tax' will affect nine million drivers, and raise up to an extra £700 million for the Government.
