Founded in 1873, St Mary’s Calne is a boarding and day school for around 350 girls aged 11–18. Approximately 80% of the girls board, benefiting from a rich boarding life, with all girls taking part in the full-curriculum and extra-curricular activities on offer.

In a successful, happy school such as St Mary’s Calne the girls feel good about themselves; their talents and gifts are spotted and nourished.

Outstanding Pastoral CareOutstanding-Pastoral-CareSt Mary’s is renowned for its outstanding pastoral care. The school has a close and caring community where every girl is known and cared for as an individual. Every girl has a Tutor and in the Sixth Form (which is strong, with over 100 girls) a Director of Studies, to support and guide her through every aspect of school life, from organisational skills and subject choices through to university application. All girls go on to higher education, and the new purpose-built Sixth Form Centre, a tailor-made lecture programme, a women in corporate culture conference, debating competitions, careers advice, leadership roles and much more prepare the girls for university and beyond.

Academic ExcellenceGirls-in-ScienceSt Mary’s is committed to providing an education that will challenge and inspire its pupils, as well as helping them to achieve outstanding public examination results. On average, 15% are Oxbridge candidates and the overwhelming majority of the girls gain places at their first-choice university, with university places being awarded at Oxford, Cambridge and Russell Group universities such as Bristol, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Leeds, Loughborough, LSE, Manchester, Newcastle, St Andrews, UCL and York. Girls have chosen to read a vast spectrum of subjects at university, ranging from Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics with Economics, Mechanical Engineering and Medical Sciences to Geography, History and Modern Foreign Languages (to name but a few!) – it is an impressive list which covers nearly every subject.

Beyond the classroom
Girls-In-Music
80% of girls play musical instruments and take part in a wide variety of ensembles. The girls perform at many community events and in January 2015 our musical artistes, including the renowned Chamber Choir, performed alongside the Treorchy Male Choir in a special fundraising concert, raising £6,000 for The Armed Forces Fund.

The girls also enjoy many other sports, including tennis (with some elite players in the tennis academy), hockey, fencing, ski racing and much more.   The girls benefit from numerous cultural and educational trips; this year these have included a Science expedition to Montserrat, a History of Art trip to Florence, a French trip to Rouen and a Geography Fieldtrip to Poland.3-Tennis-GirlsIt is the individualised approach to every aspect of school life that makes St Mary’s Calne special.

“What a wonderfully nurturing and exciting environment you and your staff have created at St Mary’s. I can see why the girls thrive in such a lovely place.” Prospective parent

Drama productions in the purpose-built theatre are of the highest standard and have transferred to the London stage. The Drama Department has a unique relationship with RADA, which includes offering a course in advanced communication skills in Year 13. The girls also perform annually at the Edinburgh Fringe and Year 9 have staged successful productions at a professional theatre in Bath. All girls work for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, with large numbers going on to higher levels. The girls also perform exceptionally well in the Young Enterprise Programme. In sport, St Mary’s Calne is a force to be reckoned with. The school is represented at county level in several major sports, nationally in athletics and lacrosse, and internationally in horse riding, with all girls taking advantage of the on-site fitness suite, 25-metre indoor pool and the new full-size astro pitch.
