"I've spent a lot of time getting to know the neighbours and they're all lovely. Even though you don't see each other all the time, there's that sense of pulling together." For Dianne Watson and husband Peter the friendliness of their own tree-lined neighbourhood really adds to the attraction of living there.


That coming together is special to Dianne. "Christmas is great here. I love decorations and we put up five or six trees. I Iove to make the house look pretty but I think I'm a major embarrassment to everyone else". Peter enjoys the festivities too though; "Our home is a fun place, good for entertaining. We also have an outdoor tree and people always remark at how it's lit. In the dark it glitters and glows. It's like having a tree in the house but it's actually outside."


The owners think the size of the rooms and the layout of the property makes it ideal for a family which includes three children, two big dogs and three cats.


Before the couple moved in it was their parents' house which they had designed. "We took out a few walls, put in a new kitchen and all the flooring and decoration is new," they explain. "We changed doors from solid to glass so it feels more airy, renewed the boiler and opened up the kitchen/diner more for entertaining. It's the focal point of the house," they recall. It is Dianne's favourite room. "I live in it. It's bright and light, the animals are always milling around and there's a huge oak table where I work. And the worktops are very long so you can make a mess and just keep moving along."


Upstairs there's a galleried landing above the hall where the family tend to first meet each other in the morning. "The master bedroom is rather special because there's a big window where we can see the sun coming up over the fields. The children come in to us and sit on the big oak settle as they're getting ready," says Dianne.


The family make full use of their own outdoor space. "We had twelve children in tents in the garden for a sleepover in September and we strung up fairy lights. That was special." "The garden is south facing and we get massive great peaches on our trees because it's so hot." It has been professionally landscaped and has mature trees, specimen plants and a big patio – perfect for more entertaining and barbecues."


The property is about ten minutes from the M25 and a train from Berkhamsted takes thirty or forty minutes into Euston. The town itself has lots of good restaurants, an excellent sports centre and the Rex Cinema. "We always meet people we know when we go down to the High Street on a Saturday," says Dianne.


"People say it's very welcoming," says Peter of their home. "If I run out of eggs I would happily pop next door to borrow some," adds Dianne. So whether it is the warmth of the community or the warmth of the house itself, that is what the couple will miss when they move.
