Alitex Series Video: How to lift and store dahlia tubers

In the third of our how-to videos sponsored by Alitex, makers of bespoke greenhouses and conservatories, we show you how to lift and store dahlia tubers.

John Wood, Head Gardener at Hinton Ampner in Hampshire, shows us how to lift dahlias and store the tubers over winter.

Originally from Mexico, this herbaceous perennial plant does not enjoy cold, wet British winters outdoors. John advises us to wait until there have been a few good frosts before lifting the dahlia tubers, enabling the leaves to drop and the tubers to swell, absorbing all the nutrients in the stems. He then trims the stems (8 inches from the tuber) and stores the tuber in a warm, dry, safe place for the winter months.
