Since the 1960s, Sotogrande has been synonymous with high end marina, beach and golf development. It has grown, but with only a few more plots of land left to develop, the company has decided to spread its brand further a field and the first development outside Spain will be in the Dominican Republic. This Spanish speaking Caribbean island may be better known for cheap and cheerful all-inclusive holiday packages, but down on its south eastern tip, something far more exclusive is under way.
Cap Cana is a massive 1.5 billion dollar project covering 8,680 acres, of which there are 3.4 miles of virgin beaches and a series of limestone cliffs, which offer magnificent views of the Caribbean Sea. It’s just 10 minutes drive from the Punta Cana international airport and although you presently have to change at either Paris or Madrid, it is hoped there will be direct flights from the UK by the end of 2008.
Just launched is the Sotogrande at Cap Cana scheme, which it is hoped will become one of the most luxurious tourist and residential developments in the Dominican Republic. It’s in a prime position right between Las Iguanas golf course, one of three Jack Nicklaus courses at Cap Cana, and the Altabella Sanctuary and runs right down to the waters edge. There will be 352 apartments, all with Jacuzzis, in 32 three and four storey buildings, a boutique hotel, spa and leisure facilities.
