Start at the source by dealing with any standing water spots in the garden. Make sure you replace birdbath water once a week, and keep plants pruned in and around your pond as these are perfect breeding spots. Keep goldfish as they will eat the larvae as will tadpoles, and toads and frogs will eat mosquitoes. Having a water feature to agitate the surface will also disturb egg laying.

Also
* Keep streams and ditches clean so the water can flow freely
* Remove any unused pots, planters and jars around the garden
* Keep roof gutters cleared
* Check septic tanks and cesspools for ground surface water.

Keep mosquitoes out of the house by installing screens across open doors and windows. Keep the air moving inside by using a fan which makes it harder for them to land.

Best insect repellent:
* Citronella
* Eucalyptus oil
* Peppermint oil
* Cedarwood oil
* Lemongrass oil
* Tea tree oil
* Neem oil
* Deet: it’s controversial but the best known chemical deterrent used in sprays and lotions, beware of use on children.
* Plug-in sound emitters
* Plug-in fragrance diffusers

Try different types of insect repellents, as they will work differently on different skin types and with different species of mosquito. Avon Skin So Soft Soft & Fresh Dry Oil Body Spray is not classified as an insect repellent, but has rave reviews!

Other top tips include wearing light clothing, and keeping covered, as mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours.

Try taking Vitamin B1, some people find it makes them less attractive to biting insects, as does garlic.

There is even an application available for the Iphone which emits a high-frequency sound to keep them away.
