Wild Scottish islands estate for sale

Described as standing in ‘rugged isolation against the full force of the North Sea’ in the brochure, this small group of islands comprise the Out Skerries Estate which lies nine miles east of Shetland.

The estate is made up of three main islands plus two smaller islands and various rock outcrops. The community on Kerries is scattered around the sheltered inner shores and the crofting townships are located close to the harbour. The landscape is breathtaking with rocky shores and rugged cliffs.

There is no working property on the estate but there are two derelict buildings formerly used as the coastguard lookout and the signal post.

Out Skerries is a beautiful place – in early summer the islands are covered in wild flowers and it’s well-known for its wonderful bird life and as a breeding ground for kittiewakes, oyster catchers and eider duck. There is also excellent fishing with mackerel, flounder, lobster and crab. Seals and porpoises are often spotted and there is good sailing, presumably weather allowing. The coastline is also historic and has claimed many ancient shipwrecks, most notably the Dutch treasure ship the Kennermaerlandt in 1664, a canon from which lies on the rocks off the island.

In all the land comes to around 620 acres. This is a thriving fishing and crofting community, there is a regular crossing from mainland Shetland to the islands and there are scheduled flights to the islands’ airstrip from Shetland and a number of UK airports.

The guide price is £400,000. For further information please contact Knight Frank on 0131 222 9600 or visit www.knightfrank.co.uk.
