Re-home a Battersea dog this spring

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home has a long history of caring for dogs which have been abandoned or whose owners were unable to cope. Unfortunately many dogs at Battersea arrived because their previous owners only considered what they wanted their dog to look like – not its background and behaviour patterns. As a result Battersea has seen a rise in the number of pure breed dogs it receives as well as a rise in the number of dogs that need country homes. The most popular dogs purchased by misinformed town dwellers are, incredibly, Border Collies.

These dogs love mental and physical stimulation – they are bored silly in the city and need space and air and things to chase. Other breeds unhappy with life in the city are Jack Russell Terriers (miniature whirlwinds), Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers (both have endless reserves of energy and stamina), Springer Spaniels (originally bred for retrieving they have energy and stamina reserves to rival the Labradors and Golden Retrievers) and Lurchers (a very strong chase instinct coupled with very bad recall means a three legged Lurcher in the city). Battersea has also lately seen a rise in Japanese and American Akitas. These awe inspiring dogs were originally used as hunters in Japan, therefore they have a very low tolerance of other dogs and so need to move to an area with a low dog population. These are examples of some of the breeds which are unhappy in the city, and over the next few months dogs like these will be looking for places to live where they are more at home, with loving owners who can give them the attention they need. This April our two dogs in need of a country life are Perry and Bruce.

Poor little Perry is a cracking dog who has been in kennels for far too long and is desperate to find a special place to call home. When he arrived at Battersea Perry needed an operation on his back leg, which is why he has been here for a while.

Perry is a beautiful dog, inside and out. He’s fun and friendly and will make a great companion. His dream home would be out in the countryside where he has lots of space to run around and play and he would love active owners who are able to take him on lots of long walks and make him part of the family.

Perry is very intelligent and loves to learn. Because he has been in kennels for so long he will need owners who are willing and committed to giving him further training. However, he has bags of potential and will be a joy to work with.

This lovely lad is suitable to live with other dogs and could also live with older children who are able to help with his training and be his playmates.

If you can offer Perry the home he desperately needs then please contact Battersea Dogs & Cats Home on 020 76279234 or emailrehoming@battersea.org.uk.

Name: Bruce
Age: 6 to 12 months old
Breed: Mongrel (cross)

Beautiful Bruce is a happy chap who lives life to the full. He is a very friendly dog who adores being around people and will make a fun and doting companion.

Bruce has lots of energy so will need active owners who can give him all the exercise and stimulation he needs. His ideal home would be out in the countryside with a big garden to play in.

He is an intelligent boy who is very willing to learn. Bruce has a good grasp of basic training but he will need further work in this area. However, with his adorable character and his eagerness to please he will be a joy to work with.

Bruce cannot live with other dogs, but he would make a good companion for older children who can help with his training.

If you can offer Bruce the home he deserves then please contact Battersea Dogs & Cats Home on 020 76279234 or emailrehoming@battersea.org.uk .
