Re-home a rescue dog or cat this June

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home has a long history of caring for dogs which have been abandoned or whose owners were unable to cope. Unfortunately many dogs at Battersea arrived because their previous owners only considered what they wanted their dog to look like – not its background and behaviour patterns. As a result Battersea has seen a rise in the number of pure breed dogs it receives as well as a rise in the number of dogs that need country homes. The most popular dogs purchased by misinformed town dwellers are, incredibly, Border Collies.

These dogs love mental and physical stimulation – they are bored silly in the city and need space and air and things to chase. Other breeds unhappy with life in the city are Jack Russell Terriers (miniature whirlwinds), Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers (both have endless reserves of energy and stamina), Springer Spaniels (originally bred for retrieving they have energy and stamina reserves to rival the Labradors and Golden Retrievers) and Lurchers (a very strong chase instinct coupled with very bad recall means a three legged Lurcher in the city). Battersea has also lately seen a rise in Japanese and American Akitas. These awe inspiring dogs were originally used as hunters in Japan, therefore they have a very low tolerance of other dogs and so need to move to an area with a low dog population. These are examples of some of the breeds which are unhappy in the city, and over the next few months dogs like these will be looking for places to live where they are more at home, with loving owners who can give them the attention they need. This April our dog in need of a home is Linus and our cats are Bear and Izzy.

Bear & Izzy are the best of friends and are looking for a country home where they have space to roam and go on daily adventures. This pair would be ideal on a farm as they have a high hunting drive.

Whoever takes on this duo will need to give them time to settle. They can both be nervous at first, but once bonded with their new owners will make loving, affectionate and very entertaining pets!

Ideally, Bear and Izzy are looking for experienced cat owners who have owned Bengals or similar high maintenance breeds before. Bengals are very different to your average cat and are almost like dogs in the amount of time needed to be dedicated to them.

In the right home, Bear & Izzy will make fantastic and fun additions to the family; they have big personalities and are very energetic and inquisitive.

*Any potential owner will need to speak to a Battersea veterinary surgeon and have a home visit prior to taking this gorgeous duo home*

If you can offer this pretty pair the home they deserve please contact Battersea Dogs & Cats Home Old Windsor on 01784 494460 or email bow.rehomers@battersea.org.uk

linus

Lovely Linus is one of the friendliest and most affectionate dogs you could ever wish to meet – he’s a big softy with a heart of gold and is so content with life. He adores people and treats everyone he meets like an old time friend. He is also very sociable with other dogs so could live quite happily with another calm canine companion.

Sadly, this lovely lad has severe hip dysplasia which means he has limited mobility and possibly a shorter life span. However, he is such a happy boy and he seems to get on with life like any other dog and will be a wonderful addition to the family. Whoever takes Linus on will need to understand is prognosis and take the necessary steps to help him cope in his day to day life; he will need limited exercise and cannot live in a house where there are lots of stairs, and will need regular vet checks for his condition.

Linus’s ideal home would be out in the countryside where he has his own garden to potter about it. As long as he has people to give him lots of love he will be a very happy dog. He could live with another dog, as long as it was more of a companion than a playmate.

He is such a super dog who deserves a loving new abode. If you can offer Linus the home he is looking for then please get in touch with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home Old Windsor 01784 494443 or email bow.rehomers@battersea.org.uk.
