An attractive and spacious detached family home situated within Potten End which is a short drive from central Berkhamsted. The property has been well cared for by the current owners and is situated at the lower end of a cul-de-sac with views over open countryside. As you enter the hallway doors le
"What struck me, the first time I walked into Chestnut House, were the incredible levels of light and the marvellous proportions of the rooms," says the owner Cecily. "My husband, Kieron, bought this house 22 years ago and it's been a home to seven children. It's a property which positively lends itself to family living and however many people are in the house it somehow absorbs any mess which comes with the territory of a large family." The house which is thought to have been built in the 1950's has three floors with the top rooms having some spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. "When I look out of the open Velux windows on the top floor all I can see are farmers' fields," adds Cecily. "The colours are forever changing from the impressive yellow of the oilseed rape to the ploughed furrows later in the year. The views are unbelievable and it's like observing a painted canvas. "Every room is big in this house including the hallway. We sit down and eat as a family at the table in the dining room every night and this room is also home to the piano. Later on during an evening we'll all go into the sitting room. There are four children at home now and this room is a particularly wonderful place in winter when the open fire is blazing. We've installed a new fire surround but have renovated the original wooden parquet flooring in the sitting room. "Outside, our garden is beautiful, large and flat with plenty of mature trees, shrubs and flowers. There is an expansive patio, where when the weather permits we'll have breakfast and look out over the garden. We also back onto a small area of woodland. In April and May it's densely packed with bluebells and seeing that, you then know spring has definitely arrived. There are some beautiful walks close to the house and we'll often all go together with the dog. It's a short stroll along the road and then we're into farmland stretching before you as far as you can see. "I never get tired of the views, and living in Potten End, has been a perfect start for the children," says Cecily. "It's such a safe environment with an excellent traditional village primary school – one which is consistently highly rated in Ofsted inspections. The school and its staff are very much part of the community with the philosophy that 'it takes a village to raise a child'. At secondary level there are a number of schools to choose from – many with a dedicated bus service to them." Potten End also has a Post Office, village shops and three pubs all within walking distance of Chestnut House. "The Alford Arms has a good restaurant and we'll regularly take the children there for a meal," says Cecily. Away from the village there are a number of well served towns nearby. Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead are both about five minutes drive and Tring can be reached by car in 15 minutes. For a larger shopping centre Watford is 25 minutes away. Berkhamsted station is five minutes drive and from there trains into London Euston take just over half an hour. "We've had such a great family life here and the children have been so protected," says Cecily. "I have loved the space and the beautifully proportioned rooms at Chestnut House. My husband, Kieron and I will be sad to leave this beautiful haven but now that the children are older we can leave behind one dream and start another."
