Directions


From Exeter and the M5 motorway, follow the A30 dual carriageway towards Okehampton. Turn off at Whiddon Down, signed to Moretonhampstead, and then turn left at the roundabout, signed to Moretonhampstead (A382). Opposite Easton Court Hotel, turn right, signed to Chagford. At Chagford Square turn right, signed to Gidleigh and Throwleigh. Continue along this road, going down the hill and hp the other side. Immediately after the sharp left-hand bend turn right at Wayebarton Cross, signed Kestor & Thornworthy. Continue along this, passing Thorn Farm and Cottage and at Yeo Cross bear right signed to Teigncombe. After about a further 0.5 miles turn right at the T-junction signed "unsuitable for motors". Proceed down this narrow lane and the entrance drive to Northill will be found on the left-hand side.

Northill is situated about 2miles to the west of the popular small moorland town of Chagford, above the upper reaches of the River Teign valley and on the opposite side of the valley from Gidleigh. THE GARDENS & GROUNDS


To the front, south side of the house, which supports a wisteria, is a delightful Dartmoor garden with lawn sloping down to the gravel entrance driveway, edged by well stocked shrub and plant borders and granite rock garden, including rhododendron and overlooked by some fine mature trees including oak. Running down around the edge of the garden and across in front of the house, via a series of rapids and waterfalls, is the North Hill leat, originally built to supply water to the farm.


The gravel driveway leads around the end of the house, past a fine mature walnut tree, over the leat to further lawned garden areas behind the house and beside the barn and overhung by a substantial oak tree.


The entrance driveway leads from the no-through lane, across two areas of parkland, one with recently planted trees including copper beech, liquid amber, walnut, cherry and weeping lime, and the other with mature trees including cherry, cedars and whitebeam. Completely surrounding the house and gardens are a range of gently sloping pasture paddocks, divided by ancient hedge banks and walls. There is a pond at the bottom, close to the eastern boundary and at the top of the land, close to the western boundary, is an area of woodland with oak trees and bluebells.


From both the gardens and the land there are beautiful views across the surrounding countryside.
