The Lake Vyrnwy Estate was bought by the Liverpool corporation over a number of years in the 1880s for the purpose of creating the dam and reservoir to provide water for Liverpool. The Estate now contains 11,807 acres of land farmed in partnership with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) which consists mainly of moorland and rough grazing.
