Description

The Old Hyde is listed as being of Architectural or Historical Interest Grade II. An extract from the listing states: “House, C.1600, altered in C18. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with slate and handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays aligned NE-SW, aspect SE, with central chimney stack. 2 rear wings, original and C18, forming a rectangular plan. 2 storeys with attics. Central 4-panel door, the upper panels glazed, in simple C18 surround with C20 tiled gabled porch, 2-windo range of C20 double-hung sashes – the front pitch of the roof slated; the remainder is tiled – The interior has chamfered beams with lamb’s tongue stops, joists of horizontal section, original rebated boards on upper floors”.
Retaining many of its original features with its exposed timber frame and sloping floors on the first floor, The Old Hyde is in need of some modernisation. On the ground floor access through a gabled porch leads into a small lobby. Doors lead into the living room with a brick fireplace and a door into the inner hall, and into the dining room which has French doors onto the side terrace. A further door leads to the kitchen/breakfast room with a door into the inner hall off which is a bathroom and utility room. Set off the kitchen is a “studio” leading through to an office off which is a workshop housing gas fired and wood burning boilers. A staircase from the inner hall leads up to the landing on the first floor with five bedrooms, a second bathroom and a linen room. A ladder up from the first floor leads to the three attic rooms. Outside on one side of the drive is an approx. 5,175 sq ft workshop/barn/shop used for light manufacturing and some retail sales. Adjoining the house to the west is a terrace which opens out into the main garden laid mainly to lawn with a variety of trees and shrubs. In one corner is a dilapidated swimming pool in need of renovation. In all:
