Description

Plas Tan-Yr-Allt is an important and charming Regency country house, Grade II* Listed, being of architectural, historical and literary interest. The property is situated in an elevated woodland setting with southerly aspect and from which there are spectacular far reaching views across the estuary towards the sea, Harlech and the mountains beyond. Sir Kyffin Williams, the renowned Welsh artist described the view from the verandah as one of the greatest in Europe.
Lovingly restored by the current owners Plas Tan-yr-allt is a welcoming and stylish family home with elegant and well proportioned rooms. A comprehensive scheme of restoration has been sensitively achieved with the house retaining many original features including a handsome fireplace and built-in display cupboards in the drawing room, moulded arches and bay windows opening onto an extensive verandah, turned staircase with mahogany handrail and impressive cellars complete with wine bins. On the first floor all bedrooms are generous double rooms with en-suite bathrooms having white sanitary fittings and slate floors with under-floor heating.
Attached to the house at ground floor level is a Housekeepers Suite which could soon be incorporated into the main house and beyond which is a self-contained Cottage suitable for letting or as ancillary accommodation for staff or dependent relatives.
The property has a private spring water supply with pressurized tanks whilst the heating and other systems have been designed with a view to minimize environmental impact and in recognition of which the property has been given a Green Dragon Award.
Historical Note:
Dating from circa 1800 Plas Tan-yr-allt was commissioned and designed by the renowned adventurer and entrepreneur, William Alexander Madocks who was responsible for building ‘The Cob’ at Porthmadog, a remarkable feat taking the form of a massive embankment to hold back the sea. He also created the village of Tremadog, an important example of early town planning. In 1812 Madocks let the house to his friend, the young radical poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley where he completed ‘Queen Mab’. Plas Tan-yr-allt also has strong connections with Sir Clough Williams Ellis the celebrated architect who designed the nearby Italianate village of Portmeirion. It was the birthplace of his mother, Ellen Mabel Greaves and Clough was a frequent visitor to the house, the lifetime home of his Aunt Hilda, assisting her to restore the property in the early 20th century.
Many others have been drawn to Plas Tan-yr-allt including Thomas Love Peacock, a friend and contemporary of Shelley, Elizabeth Billington the infamous opera star of the early 19th century and E F Benson the author of The Mapp and Lucia novels.
