Situation

Set in a delightful rural location just outside the famous Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. This park is Britain’s only truly coastal park out of the total of 14 as it is almost entirely coastal and Lochturffin is within easy reach of the miles of picturesque coastal walks, stunning coastline and Preseli Mountains – officially mountains but in reality they are more like rounded hills and make for pleasant walking.
Convenient to the ferry port of Fishguard (with railway station) to the north-east (about 8.5 miles) and Britain’s smallest city, St David’s to the south-west (about 8.2 miles). The A40 provides a good connection to Haverfordwest, again with a railway station) (about 16.5 miles) and further east to Carmarthen (about 45.5 miles). The A48 from Carmarthen is then the link to the M4 motorway at junction 49 at Pont Abraham services (about 60.4 miles) providing access to South Wales (Swansea about 72 miles and Cardiff about 112 miles) and England, (Bristol about 150.1 miles and London about 258.2 miles).

Description

Lochturffin is a handsome Grade II listed Country House with a history thought to date back to the 16th century. The unusual name has generated a great deal of debate amongst historians but it is thought it may translate along the lines of ‘Edge of lake/ water’ and this would be apt as there is a lake nearby. Although the main house has a Georgian architectural style it is in fact Victorian in date. The former farmhouse wing at the rear of the main house was a Pembrokeshire longhouse dating back to the late 16th – early 17th century but alterations at a later date incorporated it into the present main house with the coachouse, granary and stables attached. The extension on the second floor of the farmhouse wing is believed to have been built at the same time as the Victorian main house. Throughout its history Lochturffin appears to have been a stock rearing and dairy farm owned by local rich landowners.
The whole property has undergone comprehensive and sympathetic restoration whilst respecting many original features like the sash windows, window shutters, fireplaces etc.
