Situation
Glenarbuck House takes full advantage of its elevated position with wonderful views over the Clyde, whilst a dense bank of trees and shrubs provides privacy and shelter from the A82, Great Western Road.
Accessed via electronically operated gates from Great Western Road, it shares the first part of the driveway with its former stable block (no longer in Glenarbuck House ownership) and a further bungalow. It retains its walled garden and the driveway winds eastwards towards the main house. It has a large gravel sweep with plenty space for a number of cars and a detached triple garage block to the rear of the house . The more formal gardens around the house are predominantly lawned, with a paved patio (accessed from the breakfast room), a manicured putting green and some magnificent rhododendrons providing seasonal colour. Much of the remaining land is mixed policy woodland.
Description
Glenarbuck House dates from 1804 when it was built for the merchant Gilbert Hamilton (1744-1808) who was the first president of the Glasgow Humane Society, a founding member of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Glasgow’s Lord Provost in 1792.
Other proprietors have included the Duke of Sutherland and the Scott family of the shipbuilders Scott and Sons Bowling Ltd, who lived here from 1902 to 1983, since when it has been in the ownership of the present proprietor.
Glenarbuck is a fine Category B listed Georgian mansion house in a prominent position overlooking the North Clyde Estuary. It is of neo-classical design, built under a slate roof, with a Roman Doric porticoed entrance and bowed projections. The main house offers flexible accommodation over three levels. To the rear of the main house are two self contained apartments, one on the ground floor, with two bedrooms, and one with three bedrooms on the first floor (currently let).
