Situation

Description

Dungallan is an attractive late Victorian house built in blonde sandstone under a pitched slate roof, in French chateau style, with a square tower and magnificent bay windows taking full advantage of the views.
The house is understood to have been built in 1870 by the Duke of Argyll as his summer residence and its panoramic views are amongst the best in Argyll. It was designed by David Thomson, and subsequently altered for a Mr William Bruce in 1919, by James Richardson, added a new entrance and bathrooms. Two years later, Robert Lorimer carried out further alterations.
More recently, Dungallan has traded as one of Argyll’s leading guest houses, one of only a select few to be awarded 5 stars by the Scottish Tourist Board. .
The house is built on three floors and offers flexible accommodation which is presented to a particularly high standard.



Accommodation

Dungallan has a most impressive entrance reception hallway with magnificent fireplace. It leads to the three main reception rooms including a drawing room, formal dining room and sitting room. Of particular note is an elegant drawing room with period fireplace at either end, elaborate cornice and beautiful sea views. It is presently used as a cocktail bar. Also off the main reception hallway are both ladies and gentlemans cloakrooms.
The back of the house is home to a large commercially equipped kitchen, a laundry room and a number of stores including a wine store. Also forming part of the back of house accommodation is an office and access to a Housekeeper’s Apartment
Nine en-suite bedrooms occupy the first floor with two further bedrooms and a bathroom. Downstairs is one en suite bedroom and over two levels is a housekeeper’s apartment which offers sitting room, 2 bedrooms and large bathroom.
On the second floor is a further bedroom with shower room, a store room and the tower room with wonderful panoramic views. Including the housekeeper’s apartment, there are 15 bedrooms in all.

The terraced lawn to the front of the house, overlooking the water, has a stone wall on the seaward boundary incorporating seating. The views of Oban Bay and over the Isle of Kerrera to the mountains of Mull are superb.



Directions

From Glasgow take the A82 Loch Lomond road to Crianlarich. From Edinburgh take the M9 to Stirling and the A84 through Callander and join the A85 to Crianlarich.
From Crianlarich take the A82 west to Tyndrum and fork left on to the A85, following the signs to Oban. Proceed through the town of Oban following signs for the Ferry Terminal, pass the terminal entrance and continue for about half a mile on Gallanach Road. Dungallan Country House is clearly signed on the left hand side.
