The Story
Gazing up into the vaulted ceiling where the wonderful old oak of centuries ago can still be seen, the owner of Tawr Barn admires the space he has created.
Here, within a splendid old farm building, which was once part of the Treworgan Manor estate, he has created a superb country home.
Stone, timber and glass are brought together inside the Grade II Listed building – and inspired modern day living areas now sit within the magnificent stone walls.
Large windows bring the light flooding in and clever design ensures the home will be great for family life and excellent for entertaining.
I wanted to create a home that was in keeping with the area, said the owner. It was to be a property that sat well within the Welsh countryside and somewhere people could come to enjoy the beautiful valley.
HISTORY AND COLOUR
Tawr Barn, which means bull in Welsh, is one of two Treworgan Manor Barns. Built from local stone, it was once part of the large, prosperous farm, which sits on the best land of the Llandenny Levels. It was known for its fine grazing and once housed Bevan’s Champion cattle.
There is so much history and colour attached to this place, said the owner. The idea was to invigorate the area a little and to create some wonderful homes.
Tawr Barn features three bedrooms, two reception spaces and a kitchen breakfast room. It comes with half an acre of land and was converted using traditional and environmentally friendly materials and techniques.
LIGHT AND SPACE
Downstairs at Tawr Barn, the spacious reception hall, drawing room and family areas have a good flow. Light floods in through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, where cattle would once have come in through the great barn entrance.
This part of the barn will make a wonderful living area, he suggested. This is where a new owner might install their music system or television, and where they would entertain friends.
You could imagine them hosting parties here for up to 30 people. There is plenty of space for a great oak dining table for guests to sit round on special occasions. It would look absolutely stunning.
SUNRISE
Upstairs, the master bedroom has an incredible beamed and vaulted ceiling. It also features an en suite bathroom, which has been given a contrasting modern design in the shape of a medieval tent.
There is a lot of glass in this room, he said. The new owners will be able to look out over the adjacent field and farmland, and watch as the sun comes up over the hill.
The second bedroom has a south-facing window overlooking the manor yard, as well as alternative access from original outside stone steps, where there is a stable door lobby and outstanding views.
NATURAL WORLD
The kitchen and breakfast room at Tawr Barn has a limestone floor and has a practical, covered link to the garage. The rustic style continues in this space with cupboards by Cymru Village in heavy oak and Iroko work surfaces from Barncrest, in Falmouth.
Where possible we have used local and natural materials and everything has been made on site, he said. Local craftsmen have worked on the building to ensure everything is of a high quality and the home has a welcoming feel, which brings together the modern and the traditional.
ACCOMMODATION
GROUND FLOOR
Tawr Barn is situated on the left hand side of a courtyard and stepping inside you will find yourself in a spacious reception hall with rooms leading off to each side. Ahead of you is a cloakroom with traditional fittings sympathetic to the style of the property. Resting at the heart of the home is the delightful kitchen breakfast room, which boasts a plethora of solid oak cabinets providing copious amounts of storage, while plenty of work surfaces offer a place to prepare meals. Additionally there is a butler sink and wonderful limestone flooring creating an air of rustic charm. The kitchen has access via a side door to the covered walkway/store which leads into the double garage.
To the other side of the reception hall two inter-connecting reception rooms can be found. These rooms could be used as a drawing room and dining room and both enjoy high vaulted and beamed ceilings, with long glass windows allowing plenty of natural light to flood though. From here you can appreciate the glorious vistas of the surrounding countryside. Flagstone flooring continues throughout the ground floor, generating a fluid transition from room to room.
FIRST FLOOR
The impressive oak staircase in the entrance hall rises to the galleried bedrooms on the first floor. The master bathroom is situated on the left hand side and has a roll top freestanding bath positioned under low hand crafted beams, a haven in which to relax and unwind. Two of the bedrooms are on this side of the barn and both have glass panelled windows allowing natural light through. With exposed stone walls and wide stripped floor boards, the rooms are traditional and a great blank canvas for modern or traditional furnishings. The master bedroom is superb with a further vaulted ceiling continuing right into the apex of the barn, stripped oak floorboards, exposed stone and full length windows. This room is galleried and the ground floor can be seen from full length glass panels, while the en-suite is located in the corner of the room and is completely glass in design.
SETTING THE SCENE
The beautiful stone barn with its Welsh slate roof blends into its incredible surroundings. Set on a grass hill, just below the small village of Kingcoed, near Llandenny, it has a garden of approximately half an acre.
Approached by a long driveway with paddocks either side, the gardens extend behind the barn and around to the side. The double garage can be accessed under the covered storage space next to the kitchen door or directly from outside. The front garden is laid to lawn and benefits from pretty views.
There is plenty of space for children to play and for the new owners to entertain outside. It will be fabulous to sit out there over a barbecue or quiet evening drink.
To the rear a further paddock of approximately an acre can be purchased by separate negotiation. This would allow more outside space for animals or for keen gardeners. The views of the surrounding countryside are lovely and the Blorenge Mountain can be seen from the garden.
