Nantyderry £1,150,000

Boasting beautiful views across its own undulating lawns which are complimented by ornamental ponds and a trickling brook, The Gardens is a wonderful four-bedroom family home tucked away in stunning grounds of approximately 3.5 acres (STMS). Amid the serene and tranquil surround there is also an outdoor heated swimming pool and a separate two-bedroom coach house.
The Story
Entertaining family and friends by the swimming pool, the owner of The Gardens muses that there are so many ways to relax and unwind at her delightful country home.
It was the utterly idyllic setting which captivated her when she first set eyes on this property and, in particular, it was the sight of a white painted seat encircling an oak tree that completely won her heart.
It is like living in a private park, she said. We’ve got a stream running down the bottom of the garden and a pond. It is really very scenic.
She added: It is a great family home because we have plenty of room. It is a haven for children. They are safe here and they have got all the space they would want.
NATURAL LIGHT
Dating back to the 19th Century, the detached bungalow was once part of the estate of neighbouring Nantyderry House. And over the last 17 years the owners have extensively refurbished and updated their home.
We have done so much to it since we moved in, she said. A major project was the conversion of the Coach House into a two-bedroom annexe with its own sitting room and kitchen. The bungalow has also been extended by its current owner with the addition of a spacious dining room leading from the drawing room. French windows link the dining room to the garden. A further splendid feature of the drawing room is the marble fireplace.
The pale yellow colour theme in the drawing room continues in the dining room and heightens the bright and airy ambience. It is a very sunny room, she went on. Indeed she explained this home is bathed in natural light. She added: We get the sun from 7am until it goes down at night all round the terrace at the back.
GOING SWIMMINGLY
The linked drawing room and dining room form a generous entertaining space. They are mainly used when we have visitors. We have had a couple of parties with as many as 70 people here, she said. The sociable owners of The Gardens love to invite guests into the delightful home and have matched their love of entertaining with a passion for raising funds for good causes, generating more than ?21,000 for cancer charities over the years.
The poolside is a particularly fabulous setting for a soiree and the owners have had a jazz band play there to make sure the party went with a swing.
SERENE SANCTUARY
With such beautiful gardens, sunny terraces and secluded atmosphere, they spend a lot of time outdoors. There is nobody around. You can’t even see the house from the road – nobody knows we are here, she explained.
She added: We often have breakfast on the terrace outside the kitchen door. And we really like to sit out the back overlooking the swimming pool – in the summer the doors are always open.
With a shady canopy, and tables and chairs, this terrace is the perfect spot to relax on a summer’s day. French windows lead into the sitting room, which has lovely views over the surrounding gardens.
Most evenings we relax in the sitting room, she continued.
The Gardens has four double bedrooms – two of which have en-suite bathrooms including the master bedroom, which has a lovely bay window overlooking the poolside terrace.
HEART OF OAK
The spacious kitchen is another area that the current owners love. Its oak cabinets are complemented by floor tiles that carry on through into the utility room.
People usually come to the kitchen door rather than our front door, the owner said.
It is quite big and we spend a lot of time in the kitchen, which looks onto the garden, she added. We’ve got a big table, which can seat eight people, and we mostly eat in the kitchen.
The current owners say their 17 years at The Gardens have been delightful but feel it is the right time for them to downsize. However, she added, it will break her heart when it is time to go.
It is beautiful here whatever the time of year – it is a beautiful home.
Accommodation
Taking in the peaceful surround, you step inside to be greeted by a welcoming reception hall. Offering an early indication of this home’s warm appeal, the hall opens to a central family room that connects to both the kitchen and drawing room, creating an easy flow that works well for entertaining. The spacious kitchen combines solid wood cabinets with tiled flooring and there is ample space for a family dining table. French doors open to a terrace area which is ideal for breakfast in the sun. The drawing room leads directly through to the separate dining room with views of the gardens to the rear and plenty of space to entertain. A further set of French doors in the dining room can be thrown open to allow guests to spill out onto the side terrace, while the elaborate fireplace in the drawing room heightens the warm ambience.
Moving on to the sleeping accommodation, you pass a cloakroom and invaluable utility room before reaching the four charming double bedrooms, two of which boast en-suite bathrooms. The master and second bedroom have bay windows and are positioned to the rear of the property overlooking the gardens beyond. The other two rooms face the courtyard and are serviced by a sumptuous family bathroom with free- standing bath.
The Coach House
Offering exceptional flexibility, the detached coach house can be found at the end of the driveway next to the main house. The accommodation has been decorated to a very high standard and incorporates a well-equipped kitchen and bathroom. The drawing room has a vaulted ceiling and French doors to its courtyard garden, while the two bedrooms are equally as delightful. The property is ideal as holiday accommodation or for an elderly relative or another family member seeking their own space.
Setting the Scene
A long drive flanked by majestic trees leads to the home at the heart of its idyllic setting.
It is a beautiful garden – it’s a haven, observed the owner. There are lots of mature trees including mature oak trees. The drive is a 1/3 of a mile long and edged with very tall Canadian wellingtonia trees and tarmacked all the way.
With rhododendrons producing an explosion of colour, and banks covered in daffodils, the gardens are exceptionally fine in the spring but still full of interest all the year round. There’s also a pond and a stream running through the grounds which cover approximately 3.5 acres (STMS). This is a wildlife magnet with woodpeckers, birds of prey and mallard ducks among the frequent visitors.
One year, the mallard ducks laid their eggs outside the kitchen door and we watched them hatch, she added.
To the western boundary bamboo grows up the hedgerow back towards the house and swimming pool which rustles gently in the wind and echoes the sounds of the brook and ponds.
