Situation
Thistle House is prominently situated amidst delightful landscaped gardens overlooking Loch Fyne. Its slightly elevated position affords spectacular views across the loch to Inveraray and its historic castle.
St Catherines is a small community on the shores of Loch Fyne. The neighbouring village of Strachur caters for everyday needs, including a post office, health centre and schooling at primary level. Secondary schooling is available in Dunoon, as well as more extensive services including supermarkets and a hospital. Private schooling is available in Helensburgh or Glasgow.
Thistle House is located on the periphery of Scotland’s first National Park and surrounded by some of the country’s most spectacular scenery. The land immediately behind Thistle House has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Recreational pursuits abound, including fishing, hill walking, climbing and golf. The area is renowned as a centre for sailing with the Crinan Canal providing a link to the Sound of Jura and opening out to the Firth of Clyde. Thistle House has access to its own private jetty, which is disused and in a state of disrepair but could easily be reinstated.
Description
Thistle House dates from 1912 and although a typically Scottish country house, it has the appearance of a much earlier house. It is, built of stone under a slate roof. The property has been operated for many years as a successful upmarket guest house, but could easily be occupied as a family home. It has been awarded a 4 star rating by Visit Scotland.
The house enjoys many wonderful period features including detailed cornicing and open fires. Large picture windows afford unsurpassable loch views and ensure the house is bright and airy.
Accommodation
The drawing room is perhaps of particular note. It is a large, well proportioned room with intricately detailed cornice and substantial carved wooded fireplace with open fire. This room offers both loch views and garden views from a box bay window. The garden is visited by a variety of wildlife. The accommodation on the ground floor also includes a dining room, a large and practical kitchen and a laundry room. The kitchen is fitted in period style and offers wooden worktops, a range of integral appliances and a natural slate tiled floor.
The bedrooms are presented in beautiful order and are worthy of their 4 star rating. Four en suite bedrooms (one with a dressing room) and a family bathroom are located on the first floor. The stairway continues to the second floor, which offers a further four good sized bedrooms, three of which have en suite shower rooms and one of these also has a dressing room.
The former coach house has been cleverly converted into self contained accommodation. It is presented with an equally high specification including a high quality contemporary kitchen on the ground floor which is open plan with a family room. Upstairs there is a bedroom, family bathroom and the main sitting room with fireplace and views of Loch Fyne.
The grounds of Thistle House are most impressive. Set amidst extensive, well cared for lawns, the grounds are sheltered by some magnificent mature trees. An area at the top of the garden which has been left to Mother Nature is awash with seasonal colour and regularly visited by wildlife. Thistle House has two garages.
