Description
Sidway Hall is a handsome late Victorian country house of great stature. It stands in a slightly elevated position surrounded by beautiful gardens and grounds with an attractive far reaching outlook to the south west. The house has the benefit of a self contained flat, delightful lodge cottage and an extensive range of garages and outbuildings.
The house was built in 1896 in the distinctive black and white half timbered style which became popular during the Edwardian era. Originally part of the Maer Hall Estate, it was owned by the Wedgwood family and over the years it has been the home to several successful Staffordshire businessmen including the Steventon’s of Venton Pottery. It has been a much loved home to the present owners for the past twenty years during which time it has been modernised and well maintained throughout.
Accommodation
Sidway Hall offers elegant and well laid out accommodation which has retained its considerable period ambiance. The front door opens to a charming entrance hall with a stone fireplace and parquet floor off which is an elegant and light drawing room, impressive dining room and comfortable sitting room with half panelled walls and decoratively carved fire surround. The kitchen is well fitted with a range of traditional style cupboards and a four oven oil fired AGA range and an adjoining utility room. The breakfast room is an adaptable room suitable for a further sitting room/playroom if required and off which there is a connecting door to the self contained one bedroom annexe. This is a versatile living space, ideal for a dependant relative or staff accommodation or alternatively ideal for home office space.
A polished oak staircase rises to the first floor landing off which is a formal oak panelled billiard room with an ornate carved fireplace with barley twist pillars. The master bedroom has an extensive range of fitted cupboards, a turret sitting area and an en suite bathroom. Beyond are six beautifully presented bedrooms off the main landing. A doorway connects through to a former one bedroom flat and now adapted to a games room and further bedroom suite. A back staircase leads to the second floor to three further bedrooms and a store room.
The Lodge
The Lodge reflects the same black and white half timber design of the Hall and stands close to the entrance of the drive, with mature trees providing it with a good degree of privacy. It has a sitting room, dining room, study and kitchen off the entrance hall. Upstairs there are three bedrooms and a bathroom. It has a gravel driveway and lawned garden. The Lodge is currently let on an Assured Shorthold Tenancy basis which requires two months notice to obtain vacant possession.
Outside
Impressive stone pillars with a decorative wrought iron gate opens to a long tarmac driveway leading through a beautiful mature lime avenue to a wide sweep at the front of the house flanked by rolling lawns and parkland contained within traditional park fencing.
The driveway continues into a courtyard to the side of the house where the original coach houses have been adapted to provide a range of garages with a workshop beyond. The drive continues up to a further range of outbuildings and garages, which could potentially accommodate up to nine cars and which could be adapted to stabling if required.
Gardens and grounds
Sidway Hall stands surrounded by beautiful mature gardens and grounds. Sweeping lawns and stocked borders provide all year round colour and interest from the abundance of spring planting with daffodils, snowdrops, azalea and rhododendron, magnolia, through to summer and autumn stocked borders. There is also a productive kitchen garden and part walled gardens and to one side is the hard tennis court.
The house and gardens stand surrounded by fenced parkland and fields of permanent pasture suitable for the grazing of livestock and horses. There is also an area of mature traditional native woodland.
