No image represents Jekyll's gardening style better than this June garden. Enclosed by a yew hedge, with the loft in the distance, it was a vision quite unlike the cottage garden that inspired it. Waves of white and yellow flag irises and three kinds of lupin, including large mounds of white tree lupin, captured the essence of Jekyll's gardening message. Drifts of her own strain of lupins, in 'white, purple-blue, pale purpose shading to white, pink and red-purple', were offset with pink China roses and masses of white pinks and pansies along the edges of the garden. When the autochrome was published in 1912, Jekyll commented that the colour photography has not reached 'a degree of precision and accuracy to do justice to the careful scheme of colour groupings'.
<media:text>Munstead Wood garden</media:text>
