Old Glenalmonds include the cartoonist H. M. Bateman and actor Robbie Coltrane. As befits its home country, Highland Bagpipes and Drumming are both taught. Elaine Logan, the inspirational first female Warden, has introduced the Learning Project, in which teachers observe each other’s lessons and pupils’ progress is tracked. The William Bright Society is for academically gifted pupils and independent learning through the EPQ is encouraged.

390+ pupils, aged 12–18, co-ed, mostly boarding

£5,627–£12,170

There’s a superb science block, opened by former pupil The Princess Royal, a 150-seater lecture theatre, an eco-classroom and an all-weather sports field; planning permission has been granted for a new music school and hall.

Pupils can take Extended Project Qualifications (EPQ) and there’s a Professional Skills Programme for sixth-formers that offers experience with businesses. Despite its rural location, it’s easily accessible from London and close to the Bluewater shopping centre, which is, no doubt, popular. It’s even got its own edition of Monopoly.

550 girls aged 11–18, boarding

£12,560

The principal, Jonathan Godfrey, is a leading figure in the world of sixth-form colleges and the results and breadth of subjects are impressive, as is the music: the Academia Musica choir has a recording contract and performs regularly in cathedrals. Chief sports are basketball, football, hockey, netball and rugby, and players are given individual fitness programmes at the gym.

Alumni include Paralympic gold medallist Josie Pearson, composer Samuel Karl Bohn, actor Matt Milne and pop singer Ellie Goulding. Nowadays, there’s a lay headmistress (Antonia Beary, whose career is steeped in the Catholic faith) and it takes all denominations, but it is still underpinned by Catholicism – sixth-formers attend a weekly liturgy in the chapel.

Mayfield is famed for its equestrian successes under director of riding Jill Barker – girls may bring their horses to school or share one and there are both indoor and outdoor arenas – but the school is high-achieving in many fields. A wide range of academic subjects includes economics and Latin at A level and classical civilisation and food and nutrition at GCSE.

350+ girls aged 11–18, day and boarding

£7,000–£11,300

Dr Peterken, who knew Charterhouse as housemaster before becoming head of Cheltenham College, believes this is the ‘natural extension of our current approach’, adding it will not change the school’s 400-year-old values and ethos. Charterhouse made the move from London to Surrey in 1872 for the clean air and space that the sports department is still enjoying. Music is also a particular strength. Music and drama are strong – another old boy is Country Life’s distinguished theatre critic, Michael Billington, who found the proximity of Stratford inspiring. Friday afternoons are now devoted to an extensive activity programme; choices include the BBC School Report, cooking for university, cyber-security, first aid and chamber music. The 50-plus boarders are mainly Chinese students. A typical Seafordian will be ‘articulate, confident and well-rounded’, according to the headmaster, John Green, who is perceived to have upped the academic ante and smartened the look of this non-selective school, which ‘welcomes the very brilliant and those who find the examination culture a challenge’. There’s ongoing refurbishment this term of classrooms, plus a new library and sixth-form study and social areas. A-level subjects include photography, drama and theatre, textiles, politics and psychology; at the start of the lower-sixth year, all pupils go to North Wales for a bonding trip. We provide an education that is tailored to the individual and we do this through engaging and inspirational teaching, delivered in small classes where our teachers can know and understand each pupil’s method of learning. With a greater focus on academic rigour in recent years, it is no surprise that the College continues to achieve a year-on-year improvement in examination results. They believe that giving each pupil a chance to shine in something, gaining experience and confidence to develop their talents along the way, would be beneficial to wider society. Holding a strong reputation with an extensive portfolio of achievements, Strathallan is known for providing a high-quality boarding and day establishment and creating a wonderful environment to allow children to grow and develop. It is vital that the educational process provides a variety of opportunities to ensure pupils are equipped to deal with the challenges that will face them when they leave school.

Our Location:

Set in glorious countryside on a site of 153 acres;

Offering a safe and secure environment;

Within 10 minutes of the City of Perth and 40 minutes from the nearest international airport, it makes the commute from London Heathrow less than two hours and considerably more accessible for those living around the world.

Key Facts:

The new refurbished Junior House is situated within its own campus, as well as enjoying the facilities of the main School;

Senior Houses feature individual study-bedrooms for privacy.

Wi-Fi internet access throughout the School;

Extensive playing fields, strength & conditioning centre, very successful Tennis and Clay Pigeon Shooting Academies and a golf course are just some of the facilities we have to offer;

Design Technology Centre and Art School;

Over 55 activities to choose from weekly;

A high percentage of boarders and therefore the School offers a programme which spans 7 days;

All-encompassing School offering an all-round education;

No set weekend exeats which means children can stay at School throughout the term only having to leave at half term or at the end of term;

368 of our 563 pupils are full boarders, 12% of the School Role is international from 33 different countries.

Strathallan challenges the children, encouraging them to be as good as they can be. It is a world where they make friends easily and where our staff ensure exceptional standards of care both within and beyond the classroom. The pupils are nurtured, motivated and inspired; it is a home from home where they feel safe and happy and therefore excel in whatever they do.

Testimonials

“The School revolves around boarding, with two-thirds of the 557 full boarders. Being a member of the Strathallan community is a wonderful experience in itself, but crucially it is also an outstanding preparation for the future, which Strathallan can certainly say with pride is what they offer.” A visiting Professor

“Opportunities for all to excel –this philosophy plays a vital role in the School. Be it in the classroom, or beyond in music, sport or theatre, there are genuinely opportunities for everyone. From spending time here at Strath, I have come to realise that you must grasp at every opportunity with open arms. In every chapter of your life here, new opportunities present themselves to you in various shapes and forms…...” Head Boy

“I have to say I was completely won over by the atmosphere in the School. From the youngest to the eldest the pupils seemed like such a happy confident bunch – it was a pleasure to see. The staff too seemed not only professional but also had an air about them of people who just knew they had found themselves in the right place. All in all, I shall happily report to all I meet that Strathallan is a great place to be.” Neil Oliver, TV presenter and historian

“Conquering all at Strathallan is more than achieving top grades; it’s about having the ability to be confident in whatever you’re doing, knowing that you couldn’t have given any more and having that feeling of holding your head high in a way that demonstrates inner belief and determination.” Head Girl

“Making the transition between school and university is certainly made easier by the strong academic and social grounding that going to Strathallan provides.” Former pupil (achieved a First at Cambridge University)

“I am already in love with the School after only my second week. I looked out of my bedroom window this morning and was greeted with the most spectacular views and glorious sunshine. I am in awe of the quality of teaching and can’t believe how much I have learnt. I have learnt more in two weeks than the equivalent to what would take a term to cover at my previous school, which is one of the most famous schools in the southern hemisphere and one of the elite seven. It is no secret that Scotland offers the highest education in the world. I am just delighted that I have been made so welcome and settled in so quickly.” Charlie, new international boarder

For more information or to arrange a visit please email Tessa Howard-Vyse on marketing@strathallan.co.uk or call her on 01738 812546

Fees

Junior Day - £4310 Junior Boarding - £6906 Senior Day - £6570 Senior Boarding Fees - £9682

Coffee stains Dear Mrs Danvers, My long, low 'coffee table' has a top of rattan or wickerwork. It has collected quite a bit of grease and bits of grub/crumbs in the interstices over the years. Wiping with a damp cloth is not successful. Is it safe to use a nail brush and some soapy water to clean it? Or will that weaken/damage the wicker surface? Hope you can help. I think first you want to attack the surface with a nozzle of a strong vacuum cleaner to remove the grub/crumbs, which do sound rather disgusting. When you've removed everything that will come out by suction, sit back and consider. Is the table still unpleasantly greasy? Is it, in fact, so nasty that you'd throw it out if it can't be cleaned? Then you have nothing to lose by trying a bit of soap and water. You don't say whether the surface is rattan or wicker. Rattan is generally quite tough and should survive. Wicker shouldn't be treated so fiercely and certainly not soused in water. I recommend you find a gentle detergent to attack the grease and try cleaning a small area with an old toothbrush. Don't overdo the detergent as foam is not what you need. Leave this until it is dry. If all is well, then attack the whole top with a soft scrubbing brush. Good luck. Hay bales Dear Mrs Danvers, My friends are throwing a party in their garden with a Country and Western theme. To add authenticity, they have arranged to have bales of hay for sitting on, etc. Their problem is what to do with the bales after-wards. I have suggested a donkey sanctuary or some suitable charity. A donkey sanctuary (or a horse one) sounds a fine idea. Your friends should ask the local tourist information centre (a very good source of help) if there are any animal sanctuaries nearby who would come to collect the hay. It might be worth asking the supplier of the bales if they can be recycled (and the cost of hiring them reduced). However, if I were you, I'd use straw it's lighter to lug around and much cheaper. .
