The historic center of Positano and the underlying beach can both be reached on foot in less than five minutes. Cities and towns worth visiting nearby are Amalfi, Ravello, Pompeii, Vietri and Naples. Capri can be reached by boat in 40 minutes.

DESCRIPTION OF THE BUILDING
The villa is visible from the approach of the Amalfi Drive, sitting as it does above the village of Positano and blessed with a position that ensures it is bathed by the first as well as the last light of the day.
Through a series of walkways and characteristic stairs, coming across gardens scented with the flowering citrus trees, we reach the palazzo with its handsome and elegantly formal façade, looking west over the rocky profile of the Amalfi Coast. The villa boasts two main entrances: the upper gate opens into the garden and, from there, to the central double staircase; the lower gate gives access to the large terrace furnished as living/dining area that links, through three doors, kitchen, living/dining room and staircase.
The professional kitchen is a complex and well articulated space where technological elements harmonize with the arches and the monumental fireplace, the majolica-and-marble sink, the copper pans, the two ovens (once used for bread and pizza) and the large baroque cupboard.
The living/dining room, made up of two rooms, hosts an antique Tuscan walnut table with monumental chairs and comfortable modern armchairs, the bookcase with a collection of antique books, a Neapolitan Rococo mirror and a collection of antique paintings, a few of which representing episodes of Alexander the Great’s life.

The SPA is set on the lower ground floor and hosts the indoor whirlwind pool equipped with the upstream-swim system and tiled with local majolica tiles. The antique Calidarium and Frigidarium have been replaced with the modern Sauna and Turkish bath, three spa showers, gym, sitting room with TV, massage/relax area with access to the outside terrace with solarium and whirlwind tub.

The first floor hosts two magnificent suites with original coffered ceilings and wall frescoes. Coming up, the suite N°1, named after Alfonso d’Aragona, is located on the right and features a 16th-century style with several paintings (Battle of Lepanto, Circe the Enchantress) and columns adorning the bed. The suite N°2, on the left, is named after Isabella, Alfonso’s wife, and features a very spiritual furnishing with a privileged altar and paintings portraying sacred scenes. Reaching the second floor we find suites N°3 and N°4, characterized by ceilings with wooden beams, sober furnishing and a few elegant pieces of antiques. Bedroom N°5, on the other hand, features a single bed and is perfect for those looking for privacy. A private bathroom is located on the landing. The central imposing staircase with old stone steps, decorates with polychrome stuccos, niches with statues and vases, harmonizes and links interiors and exteriors of the villa and acts as an antique art gallery.

HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY
Standing on a rock directly above Positano's bay, this Palazzo was built as an Episcopal residence around 1680 and in 1716, while Baroque was still raging, enriched by particular and precious objects from the middle-east and other country of the world.
The palazzo is still full of this human heritage among painted ceiling, lacquered doors, inlaid-wood furniture, stucco-works and handmade laces. It never lost his magnificence: not even two world wars could strike it down and the palazzo preserved its luxury, surrounded by the breathtaking landscape that made Positano a world-wide recognized miracle.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, day by day, Positano has been the refuge for artists and literary men, often come here by mistake: they were so inspired by the place that they chose to come back again… and again… and again…
The same happened to Eduard Gillhausen, a Jew Bauhaus member who had to escape Germany when the Nazi party rose to power, seeking refuge in Rome. In the Eternal City he met and fell in love with Eva Maria Vivaldi: together they decided to live the rest of their life in Positano, a town they named the Heaven on Earth.
Until the beginning of the 21st century, Gillhausen and Vivaldi welcomed their many illustrious friends in their house, whose names are easily recognized: Vincenzo Caprile, Richard Oelze, Pablo Picasso, Siegfried Kracauer, John Steinbeck, Corrado Alvaro, Dino Buzzati, Alberto Moravia, Armin Wegner, Martin Wolf, Ivan Zagaruiko… Each of them left in the Palazzo a bit of his soul and a piece of his hearts.

The current owners, an artist and an antique dealer, were Gillhausen’s guests too in the building. During their visit at the palazzo they both felt the magic power of the place. Looking for a way to preserve it, they share with few privileged guests never ending moments of peace and joy. They undertook a painstaking seven-year long restoration, combining ultra-luxury accommodation with the highest possible standard for art and antiques. All the systems have been completely remade in absolute conformity to the EEC safety rules.

EXTERIORS
Outside, the villa is completed by a beautiful garden (400 sqm), all paved with pietra vesuviana and interrupted by flowerbeds hosting the ancient citrus fruit, fig and pomegranate trees: at its edge we can find a gazebo and a laundry room. Ample paved terraces (140 sqm) wrap around the palazzo and offer a unique view of the underlying sea and the center of Positano.
