ELEGANT WOODSIDE RETREAT
Westmount, Montreal, Canada

Perched atop Westmount, Montreal's most affluent suburb, this iconic home extends across a 35,000-square-foot lot facing Summit Woods, a bird and wildlife sanctuary. The former estate of esteemed Canadian Senator Leo Kolber, the property offers 11,489 square feet of entertainment spaces and private living quarters. Its highlights include a spacious rotunda filled with natural light; formal living and dining rooms, with high ceilings and intricate architectural details, overlooking landscaped gardens and the pool terrace; and a beautifully renovated kitchen with high-end appliances and a casual dining area. At the opposite end of the residence is a sumptuous, private master suite with his-and-her en suite bathrooms and dressing rooms. French doors open to the rear gardens, and an adjacent den with fireplace and bay window provides a perfect retreat. The lower level features an exercise room, theater, two bedrooms, a den, full bathroom, and a secondary staircase to the main level.

THE LEGACY OF SENATOR LEO KOLBER
Leo Kolber, who died in January 2020, was a pillar of Canadian business, politics, and philanthropy for more than 50 years. Appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in 1983, he chaired the Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce during his 20-year tenure.
Mr. Kolber grew up in Montreal and attended McGill University at age 16. There, he met his lifelong friend, Charles Bronfman, scion of the Seagram's wine and spirits empire. After graduating with a law degree in 1952, Mr. Kolber went to work for Seagram's, becoming a director and trusted advisor to its founder, the legendary Mr. Sam Bronfman. He oversaw the firm's real estate ventures, including the TD Centre and Westmount Square, and was influential in its acquisition of MGM. Mr. Kolber, renowned for his fundraising, was a board member of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and a supporter of the city's universities and hospitals. He was devoted to Jewish causes and developed a close friendship with former Israeli president and prime minister Shimon Peres.

100 SUMMIT CIRCLE
Mr. Kolber loved to entertain. He and his wife bought 100 Summit Circle in 1974 and, with downtown Montreal a 10-minute drive away, it was the perfect setting to entertain. Their illustrious guests included Frank Sinatra, Truman Capote, Luciano Pavarotti, Harry Belafonte, Mikhal Baryshnikov, Danny Kaye, and a who's who of political figures, including close friends Shimon Peres, former Canadian Prime Ministers Brian Mulroney and Pierre Trudeau, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
In 1988, the original structure was razed to make way for a 20-room residence reimagined from the ground up for entertaining and as a haven for the Kolbers' children and grandchildren. The 9,940-square-foot, one-story home, by Canadian architect Erol Argun, with interiors by New York interior decorator Arthur Weinstein, has a timeless yet modern design. Classic architectural details, such as artistic ceiling treatments, wood-burning fireplaces, and wood flooring with decorative inlay, blend with contemporary technologies, including geothermal heating and an elastomeric membrane roof. Other amenities include a theater, gym, wine cellar, and four-car garage.

THE RESIDENCE
The elegance begins at the grand entrance hall: The cylindrical-shaped room rises 20 feet high to an oculus, which floods the space with light. It serves as an axis point for the home's public rooms; among them is the palatial reception room with soaring ceiling, built-in bar, and grand piano. It is large enough to accommodate up to 200 guests. The library is another highlight, with its rich red walls, vast bay windows, and intimate seating areas. The contemporary kitchen, renovated about four years ago, is ideal for catering large events. It has a breakfast area and a butler's pantry connecting to the grandly scaled formal dining room. The main-level primary suite has enormous walk-in closets and dressing areas, separate bathrooms, and opens to the gardens.

THE GROUNDS
The private, 0.85-acre grounds are ideal for garden parties or simply to contemplate nature. The living room, dining room, library, and master suite all have access to a lavish outdoor living space made for entertaining. It features a swimming pool and a charming gazebo with a kitchen and indoor and outdoor dining areas. Beyond are verdant lawns bounded by mature trees.
