Property descriptionBuilt as a Glebe House in 1780, Kilmahon House is rich with atmosphere and history. Owned by the highly creative Pearce family, of Stephen Pearce Pottery for half a century, the house was more recently fully refurbished and restored by its present owners to create the perfect, and perfectly comfortable, Georgian Country Home.
By replacing all floors with new joists and insulation, dry lining and insulating the walls, installing new timber sash windows, rewiring and replumbing, yet all the time maintaining a sympathetic sense of the house's history, Kilmahon has been brought fully up to date. It has been run as highly successful Country House Guesthouse, and feedback from Kilmahon's many happy guests is testament to its charm, deep levels of comfort and atmosphere.
A stone-flagged entrance hall leads through to an inner hall, and on to a large kitchen/ breakfast room, complete with an Aga, pantry and utility room. This is a space for cooking, and family entertaining in warmth and style, though a dual aspect dining room is also on this level. Go up a floor to find a very elegant wood-floored sitting room, study and drawing room. These bright rooms are also warmed by open fires, and have tall windows on to the gardens.
The six bedrooms, all en-suite, are ranged over all three floors, with four on the top floor. Two of these have commanding views of the gorgeous Ballycotton Bay. The bathrooms add contemporary levels of comfort, and one has an open fire, for the ultimate bath time luxury.
The house is sheltered by private gardens, and yet is adjacent to Shanagarry Village, and just a thirty minute drive from Cork City and airport. This makes Kilmahon House the ideal family home, rural retreat or business opportunity, building on the goodwill amassed by the current owners through their Guesthouse.
GARDENS AND GROUNDS
Attractive old stone gateposts welcome you to Kilmahon House, as the gravel driveway sweeps past lawns, and around to the house. Set at the centre of the mature grounds, approx. 1.16 ha (2.86 acres) in all, the house is perfectly positioned for privacy.
A set of stone steps arcs down from the house onto an expansive south facing lawn. There is also a walled rose garden and a large part-walled garden with numerous fruit trees. Mature trees surround the site. Part of the facade of the house is attractively slate-hung, a feature of this region, and the garden is the best spot to soak up the house's exterior elegance.
Alongside, you will also find a large coach yard, the double storey coach house offers much room for conversion or storage. Adjacent is a single storey building which has already been partially restored by the current owners. They have already installed new windows, a new door, a new roof, and a concrete floor. This gives obvious potential for further development, whether as stables, workshops or additional accommodation.
Kilmahon House is located on the outskirts of Shanagarry village. The remains of Penn Castle are located here, built for William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania state in the US.The village is a centre of craft and food, as it is home both the Shanagarry Potters, and the world renowned Ballymaloe Cookery School. Shanagarry Design Centre is also in the village and incorporates a restaurant and a branch of the Kilkenny shop.
The village is home to a National School. There is also a charming local pub.
The area, part of Ireland's Ancient East, is also rich in beaches. Kilmahon House is a ten minute walk to the blue flag beaches of Ballycotton Bay. Ballycotton village, with its glorious cliff walk and lighthouse, is just a 10 minute drive away.
Cork City, the capital of the South, with its theatres, leading art galleries, industry and business centres, as well as a choice of excellent secondary schools, is just a forty minute drive away.
