Rushwee House and Farm is located just outside the village of Slane in County Meath which is named The Royal County' due to its history as the seat of the High King of Ireland. Meath is the 14th largest county in Ireland and the 9th in terms of population. Meath was formed from the eastern part of the former Kingdom of Mide but now forms part of the province of Leinster. The seat of the High King of Ireland was located at Tara Hill, which is only some 10 km / 6 miles from Navan. The archaeological complex of Bruna Boinne is around 5,000 years old and includes the burial sites of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth, in the north-east of the county and are designated a World Heritage Site. Navan is on the banks of the River Boyne and is the administrative town of Meath. There are many beautiful walks along the River Boyne and indeed the River Blackwater and the area is famous for the The Boyne Way'.
Slane is a beautiful village and rich in history and is very well known throughout the world for the renowned concerts that Slane Castle holds regularly and now also known for Slane Castle Whiskey. The Castle is the focal point of the village and attracts many tourists into the area creating a vibrant atmosphere all year round.
The village stands on a steep hillside on the left bank of the River Boyne at the intersection of the N2 (Dublin to Monaghan road) and the N51 (Drogheda to Navan road). Coming into the village from Dublin you pass over a beautiful stone bridge that goes over the River Boyne with the Old Mill to the right making it one of the most picturesque settings for entering a village in Ireland. The village centre dates from the 18th century. The village and surrounding area contain many historic sites dating back over 5,000 years.
There is excellent racing nearby in Navan and Fairyhouse, with Leopardstown, Naas, Punchestown and The Curragh within easy driving distance. There is superb walks throughout the area along the River Boyne and Newgrange is only a short distance from the village. It is also well located for shopping being a short distance from Navan and Drogheda.
Rushwee House has been in the same family for five generations, it was built by their ancestors in 1869. It is steeped in history and around the Lawn Field the remains of a Ha Ha are clearly visible.
