The house sits on approx. 43ha (1.06 acre) of landscaped grounds, leading down to the waterfront of Killary, Ireland's only Fjord. The site itself soaks up views of the Mweelrea and the Maamturk Mountains. On the Wild Atlantic Way, and within five minutes' walk of the Western Way, it is paradise for walkers, hikers, foodies and all enthusiasts of astonishing natural beauty.
Recently refurbished and fully upgraded, with a wide bay window giving panoramic views, The Boat House is the perfect spot to enjoy the views of this multi-award winning location, accolades for which include the AA's Top Ten Drives of the World, and the BBC's Top Ten Places to See Before You Die.
The Boat House
A charming arched doorway leads into the granite porch of The Boat House, which then opens up to the stunning double-height interior space. This houses a large open plan kitchen, with a breakfast bar, a sitting room with an open fire, and dining area set into the bay window giving uninterrupted views across the water.
There are also two large double bedrooms, and a bathroom downstairs. Upstairs is the main bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe. This bedroom has Juliette balcony, again with waterfront views, and an en-suite. There is also a large study / home office at this level which it is the perfect place to become inspired to work.
Recently fully refurbished, The Boat House is in turnkey condition, decorated with that relaxed beach house feel that is bright, airy and fresh throughout. To walk into The Boat House is to accept an invitation to relax, unwind, and enjoy the full benefits of the marvellous lifestyle this astonishing location has to offer.
Gardens and Grounds
Sheltered from the iconic road by mature planting, and with ample parking, The Boat House lies on one of the AA's Top Ten Drives of the World. The c.0.43 ha (1.06 acre) grounds include a hard tennis court, surely with one of the best views in the world; a sheltered conversation pit and separate patio; plus lawns, a kitchen garden, and fruit trees including plums, figs, berries and apples.
While the house is well-designed, thoughtfully laid out and tastefully decorated, the true lure of the property must be the location. Equidistant from Clifden, Connemara's Capital; and Westport, which has been voted the best place to live in Ireland, you are in the ideal spot to enjoy a healthy active lifestyle, or to relax, and soak up the inspirational beauty, which has beguiled artists and writers including Paul Henry and Oscar Wilde.
Wilde spent time in one of the nearby houses, while Henry's paintings of Killary Harbour and Fjord are some of his most notable. One of these hangs in the foyer of the Merrion Hotel.
The area is also a foodie paradise: think fresh fish and plentiful foraged finds. Langoustines, crab, cod and squid are all sourced locally, as are wild mushroom, hazelnut and a multitude of wild herbs and berries.
Those seeking activity can launch a kayak directly from the property, while larger boats can be moored at the local pier, two minutes' walk from the aptly named Boat House. There are also further moorings in the bay itself.
Two adventure centres lie at either side of the Fjord. The Delphi Adventure has a spa and high-class restaurant, while Delphi Lodge, which has played host to Prince Charles, has some of the best fishing in Ireland. A twenty-minute drive will bring you to the Blue Book Rosleague Manor, which has one of the most beautiful dining rooms in the country.
An extraordinary area of outstanding natural beauty, Leenane sits at the head of Killary, Ireland's only fjord. The dramatic setting is enhanced by the surrounding mountains, including Mweelrea and the Maamturks, which are renowned among walkers and nature lovers.
The charming village has cafs, a restaurant, seaweed baths, a shop and local museum. The Leenane Hotel is one of Ireland's oldest coaching inns, dating from the 1790s, where the chef creates feasts from local produce. Leenane is also known around the world as the setting for Jim Sheridan's acclaimed film, The Field, starring Richard Harris and John Hurt.
A key point on Wild Atlantic Way, the world's longest defined coastal touring route, Killary Harbour has been included in the 15 Signature Discovery Points along the 2,500 kilometre route. It also lies on one of the Top Ten Drives of the World, as designated by the AA.
The nearest town at approximately 30km is Westport, Co Mayo. Clifden, Co Galway is 37km distance, and Galway City, at 67km is less than an hour away. Ireland West Airport Knock is an hour and a quarter drive.
