The Eclectic villa at Blekerij 52 was commissioned by the family Louis Leonard Joseph L'host. Originally, the adjacent building at Blekerij 50 was part of the villa, but was later split off. Around the middle of the nineteenth century, L'host was involved in the establishment of the paper mill L'host, Weustenraad & Cie, the later KNP and nowadays SAPPI. The architects responsible for the villa were Remont & Fils, in Lige (B). The construction of this villa probably took place in the period between 1880 and 1890.
The villa is situated in a small area on the western bank of the Meuse, which was originally separated from the villa park by the attenuated canal to Liege. Because of this location, the villa is strongly connected to the nineteenth-century urban development of Maastricht. Of great importance because of the historical spatial relationship with the surrounding waters, roads and facilities.
After the abolition of the fortification law in 1867, the vacant building site on the south side of the city of Maastricht was "taken over" by the wealthy people of Maastricht. They had a number of spacious villas built here from 1887 onwards. The villa L'host is one of the first examples that was built here in get "Villapark".
