Property descriptionEquine Estate covers more than 283ha (699 acres) of native bush, forestry, meadows, exotic gardens and trails. It has earned international envy among sporting claybird enthusiasts from around the world – novices to world champions alike. This is the public face of Equine – its name an anomaly in truth. Horses don’t run here – yet this estate would cater brilliantly to an equestrian element as well.Much of the estate is a private realm for family; an escape from a hectic life in Europe and elsewhere in the world where business takes precedence. This was their refuge.
Bought in 1984, the land was developed on a magnificent scale. Forestry, native bush, around 70,000 ornamentals, sealed roading, trails, gardens and buildings all hide behind a stone, gated entrance. Pheasant, quail and Danish fallow deer were introduced at the outset and their progeny continues to form part of the Equine legacy.
Internationally-renowned New Zealand sportsman, Bill Hamill designed the sporting claybird course – 2kms spreading across fields, with 50 targets and 36 stations. For non-shooters, it’s a walk into another world, tranquil nature trails and wildlife to marvel at, an experience at Equine is like no other.
Again, this is merely the entree.
Dotted amid the trees are six impressive dwellings – masterminded in characteristic Basque fashion. Associated with traditional farmhouses in Northern Spain and South-western France, these typify the half-stone, half-heavy timber architecture that distinguishes the Basque technique.
It begins with the main homestead – the largest and most detailed building with a spacious veranda extension. Under one roof, a luxury ensuite-bedroom lodge and a two-bedroom, shared ensuite, self-contained apartment. Boasting elegant facilities with outdoor flow and open stone fireplace comfort, there’s also timber-lined attic storage and a separate triple garage. The home commands king position.
A manager’s house mirrors the homestead’s construction and offers two bedrooms with shared ensuite, office, fireside living, outdoor flow and a double garage. Adding to this, two additional family homes both consisting of three bedrooms and each pursuing the same Basque style. All the homes are complimented by separate driveways, landscaped gardens and blissful seclusion within idyllic settings – all set apart from one another.
Two large implement sheds conclude the dwellings here with substantial workshops, offices and staff accommodation, which completes the Basque replication. One comprising of four bays – three with mezzanines - an office and bunkroom at one end with a commercial kitchen and bathroom at the other. These dwellings are lined and built to be used as function spaces.
As well as the clubhouse, there’s a smoko hut, engineering shed, poison shed, wood-shed and hay barn; various pens, yards, chicken house and kennels. Completing this are three, deep-well bores (111-117m deep with casing to 73-79m; plus, a 100,000 litre holding tank.
The potential here is endless. As a lodge for discerning guests seeking privacy and recreation, there is no limit. The sporting claybird course and hunting aspect is already recognised around the world. There’s forestry, apiary potential, wildlife breeding – scope to develop the equine headline - imagination knows no bounds.
It simply embraces a place known as the end of the world. Welcome to Equine Estate – and the opportunity of a lifetime.
