Property descriptionAn industrial garage reincarnated as a welcoming, spacious home with unique technical features
History combined with modern construction engineering to create this architectural masterpiece of a home. Brick, steel and wood harmonize with the lines and contours of the original building to make a welcoming home whose body and soul still clearly retains concrete reminders of its previous lives as a bus garage, as well as a wool factory.
During the reconstruction period, The Swedish television (SVT) series, husdrömmar (House Dreams) hosted by Gert Wingårdh, a noted Swedish architect, followed the whole process (episode 6 in 2016, and a later visit in 2018).
The distinctive gable with its three pairs of large windows and its robust doors creates an exciting first impression. The simple but beautiful facade is framed by an austere wooden deck with easily accessible spaces, wood, Corten steel and shingles. Around the corner is the main entrance made of teak, a kind of wood that we also find elsewhere in this house. There is still somewhat of a garage feeling here, created by the sturdy steel beams, beautiful old wooden planks, sizeable areas of unfinished concrete, and not least, the wonderful texture of the bricks and mortar. The large family room, which includes the kitchen, dominates the entire ground floor, where every detail has been meticulously selected after copious research. Water-bearing fireplaces and stoves create a cosy ambience throughout the massive volume of this home. The kitchen is equipped with major appliances as well as some distinctive features that every self-respecting garage reborn as a home should have, like compressed air to clean mushrooms and lettuce and a hydraulic lift to raise an enormous wine cooler from the concrete floor below.
There is a large dining area with access to the deck, and plenty of natural light, thanks to the south-west exposure. There is space for a lounge group with a wall-recessed TV, projector screen and audio. Adjacent to the family room, there is also a small room behind sand-blasted folding doors that can be used as a second lounge, bedroom or office. The bathroom is a story in itself, replete with ingredients such as a clear-lacquered copper ceiling and a hidden corner containing a washing machine and a dryer.
One flight up is the airy mezzanine level with access to the lower floor. The industrial look is somewhat softened here, with light-coloured ash wood setting the tone throughout. This level has two bedrooms, which can easily be made into three, as well as a large bathroom with an austere design that includes both a bathtub and a shower area. The bathtub has a bracket for a television screen or a tablet, which can be connected to the network in the house.
One distinctive feature seen throughout the entire building are the interesting technological solutions that are often well-hidden, or alternatively, are given pride of place. These show environmental awareness and simplicity, but at the same time, also emphasize function, engineering and comfort solutions that are rarely seen. There are electric and computer outlets in every nook and cranny, both indoors and outdoors.
The property includes an additional building used as a guest house, with a kitchenette, lavatory and shower, as well as a separate heated storage area. In the far gable of the house there is also a separate utility room that includes a central vacuum system, an air and warm water pump and its connections to the water-bearing fireplaces and solar energy connections for pool operation.
