Property description
In the south of the Touraine region, between Tours and Châtellerault, a 15th century castle with French MH classification and its outbuildings - ref 611139
The property is located on the borders of the Touraine, Vienne and Berry regions. This great castle and its impressive architecture is in the heart of a small picturesque village with local shops and amenities. The village is approx. ten kilometres from a medium-sized town in the south of the Touraine region where there is the closest train station, a market and a full range of shops; three hours from Paris by the A10 motorway and forty from Tours and Châtellerault.
In the heart of the village and opposite the church, this group of buildings spans over an estate of approx. three hectares of perfectly maintained land and out of sight. Access to the castle, located in the middle of the property is by means of a driveway passing a succession of outbuildings some of which have been converted into gites. Two large arches supporting a gallery with a slate hipped roof lead to a main courtyard and seigneurial dwelling. In front of the castle, another large outbuilding opens on to this courtyard. From here, a second path leads to a caretaker’s lodge as well as a separate entrance. To the west, a driveway leads to the garden and landscape park at the rear of the castle.

The castle

It dates back to 1422 and is built of Touraine Tuffeau stone on a hillside. On one side, the service quarters with an impressive 18th century building; in the centre, a miniature castle and a square building flanked by watch turrets and several towers. Just like the castle, the latter underwent many changes mainly in 18th and 19th centuries. It is linked to the castle by a covered gallery that marks the limits of the service quarters’ courtyard. On the other side, the seigneurial dwelling, a rectangular building, is also flanked by towers and small buildings.
In terms of military architecture, there are still remnants of the drawbridge leading to the castle’s square tower, portcullis near the miniature castle, loopholes and canons, mainly on the outside walls of the square tower, the original entrance to the castle.

The outbuildings

The numerous outbuildings include: three gites one of which has three bedrooms and the other two, two bedrooms, entirely renovated. A studio; a kitchen, lounge, bedroom and ground floor bathroom, as well as a dormitory on the first floor; a building housing a very large 140 m2 reception room with professional kitchen space suitable for marriages.
In another building, a 80 m2 more rustic reception room with fireplace and terracotta floor tiles.
A vast barn, a wood storage room, old stables and barns and other storage sheds, not to mention the numerous troglodytic caves that may be used.

The park

The three-hectare park planted with various species of trees, majestic cedars and century old oak trees. In a landscape garden, a walkway meanders through the lawns, shrubs and flower beds. Close to the vegetable garden, there are old greenhouses and a well.

Our opinion
Apart from the intrinsic beauty of the building and the remarkable juxtaposed roofs of the miniature castle (hipped, conical and hexagonal turrets), it is quite an urban planning achievement. The layout of the buildings in relation to one another, the panoramic views towards the village and its church spires form a striking estate, enticing and inviting you to look closer at the beautiful details and even occupy the site. The balance and the attention to so many details are rare to come by in such a property. This site is definitely for lovers of old stone.
