Built in 1975, Freynestown Stud has been dedicated by its owners to breeding and rearing top quality Irish thoroughbreds. Purpose built, the house is in the Period style, and sits timelessly in the land. There are three generous bedrooms in the main house, as well as a welcoming kitchen, and more formal entertaining rooms. A semi-separate guest wing houses two further bedrooms, and this opens onto the stable yard.
Completely refurbished in 2015 by the current owners, the stable yard is an excellent working space for a variety of equine pursuits. There are nine looseboxes, a hay barn and plenty of outbuildings. Outside, approx 9.7ha (24 acres) of stud-railed paddocks provide limestone-enriched grazing, sheltered by mature trees.
The house itself has also been completely refurbished and redecorated, and the kitchen upgraded. Refurbishments include replumbing, rewiring, re-roofing, drylining and insulation, which means you benefit from a lovely family home, in a classic style, and yet in walk-in condition with all the contemporary comforts.
Reached via a curving, copper beech hedged avenue, and protected by security gates, Freynestown is a wonderful family home and equestrian facility. Close to Dublin, it is secure and comfortable, and has ample space for an easy life, full of dogs, ponies and horses, in the very heart of some of the very best Irish horse country, famed the world over.
Clad in Virginia creeper, Freynestown House belies its relatively young age. From your first view, via the curving avenue, that takes you past meticulously cared-for fields and paddocks, it seems as if the house has been there forever. In fact, it was built some forty-five years ago, and has been more recently meticulously restored and upgraded.
A wide entrance hall, off which a stair curves upwards, leads to a very elegant dual aspect drawing room, which has French windows to the gardens, and is warmed by an open fire. Beyond this is a large dining room, that can host extensive and expansive dinner parties, or smaller family celebrations with ease.
Across the hall and to the right, the kitchen/breakfast room is a charming, sunny space with an Aga, and views across the sheltered and pretty patio and gardens. There is also a family room / den and a large utility room. This opens to a long hallway that gives access to a semi-separate bedroom wing, which houses two bedrooms, both ensuite, and a study.
Upstairs from the main hall, there are three bedrooms, all doubles, including a very generous master suite with its own dressing room and large ensuite.
Gardens and Grounds
Freynestown House is surrounded by mature gardens, with patios, lawns and formal planting. Beyond this is a well-designed stable yard that includes nine stables, a tack room, a lockup garage, a workshop, a three-span haybarn, two all-weather paddocks with shelters. There are two additional outdoor shelters in two of the fields.
The lands and paddocks extend to c9.7ha (24 acres) and are fully fenced with stud rails, and some copper beech hedging. The land at Freynestown is renowned for being limestone-rich, and so is ideal for breeding and rearing healthy, strong horses.
The gardens surrounding the house have been planted to reflect the Victorian-era aspect to the design, and are full of mature trees, plants and shrubs, including hosta, lupins and columbines. The curving drive, accessed by security gates, brings you through the paddocks, past well-tended copper beech hedging, right to the front door, and into another, beautiful world.
Wicklow is known as the Garden of Ireland, and Kildare is renowned as the Kingdom of the Irish Horse. Freynestown Stud is perfectly positioned to enjoy the best of both worlds.
