HISTORY, STATE AND FINISHES The castle was built in the early 13th century as a keep defending the city of Siena. The first notable mention of the fortress is in 1313 when the castle was besieged by Henry VIII of Luxemburg, who was however unable to conquer it. From that moment, the castle was passed from family to family until the final confrontation between Siena and Florence in 1555. The Spanish forces captured the castle a first time but were quickly driven away. The second and final conquest marked the end of the siege of Siena and the end of the war. From then onward, the castle lost its defensive role and became a luxury countryside manor. Entirely made out of bricks, the castle boasts an imposing look, highlighted by a visible talon, around which, instead of a typical medieval water-trench, is located a hedged garden. A continuous string-course marks the piano nobile (first floor) while the whole perimeter is decorated by a line of trefoil arches. All the openings boast segmental arches, while embrasures dot the walls and make it evident the fortress was a military emplacement. Putlog holes are scattered all around the buildings. From a lancet archway, topped by a machicolation, one can enter the internal quadrangular courtyard, with porticos on three sides and walls supported by octagonal pilasters. From here, a short staircase (masonry) leads to the piano nobile. EXTERNAL AREA The castle comes with a 16.5 hectare plot of land. This is split among arable land (12.7 ha, including a beautiful Italian garden and a small wood), olive grove (2.4 ha with 400 trees) and Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG vineyard (1.4 ha).
