Happily-ever-after treasures created by Cece Jewellery
Cece Jewellery’s latest collection — Once Upon A Time — brings to life figures from fairytales, dreamlike settings and romantic charms.
There are jewellers, and then there are storytellers who happen to work in gold. Cece Jewellery belongs emphatically in the sec ond category. Since its founding, the brand has pursued a singular and quietly revolutionary idea: that a ring or a necklace ought to be not merely beautiful, but meaningful — a wearable world, rich with symbol and narrative, as dense with feeling as the finest illuminated manuscript.
With the arrival of its Once Upon A Time collection this summer, that ambition has found its most enchanting expression yet. Cece’s latest work reads, quite deliberately, like the opening line of a children’s bed-time tale, because that is precisely what it is. Filled with pieces that appear to have stepped out from the illustrated pages of a beloved storybook, each design unfolds across a canvas of frosted 18-carat gold, the imagery brought to vivid life through hand-engraving, scattered gem- stones and most remarkably, champlevé enamel, one of the most exacting and rarefied crafts in fine jewellery.
Cece has channelled symbolism and story into a captivating jewellery collection.
The art of champlevé, in which recessed cells are carved directly into the metal and filled with layer upon layer of powdered glass enamel, then fired and hand-polished until the surface glows like an oil painting, is vanishingly rare in the 21st century. Only a handful of master enamellers in the world possess the skill, patience and nerve to practise it at the level Cece demands.
The results are extraordinary: colours of impossible depth and luminosity, motifs rendered with the precision of miniature portraiture and scenes that reward close inspection like a Dutch Golden Age canvas.
Each chapter of Cece’s stories comes to life in painterly champlevé enamel.
The Once Upon A Time pieces feel collectively like illustrations from a book that one half-remembers from childhood — familiar enough to move, strange enough to enchant. The Fairytale Horse Ring is perhaps the most overtly romantic: a snow-white horse in full gallop through a field of blushing pink roses, the scene wrapping the entire circumference of the signet in enamelled splendour.
The Moonlit Sea Ring is quieter, more contemplative — a glassy, ink-dark ocean lit by a ribbon of moonlight, the horizon an invitation to venture further.
What magic lies beneath a moonlit sea?
The Horseshoe Ring functions as a talisman as much as an adornment: the ancient symbol of luck rendered in champlevé, hand-engraved along the shoulders, carrying a four-leaved clover and ‘the promise of love’.
From the deep comes the most mesmerising piece: the Deep Sea Octopus Ring, in which the creature drifts across the golden face of the signet, its tentacles unfurling towards a sea floor set with diamonds. The octopus, the brand notes, is a symbol of personal transformation and wisdom, a creature of pure instinct that moves towards what feels right. A quietly powerful emblem for a piece intended, like all of Cece’s work, to be worn as a statement of inner life.
The octopus is hand enamelled on a golden canvas.
The maritime theme continues into the chokers: the Blushing Shell Pearl Choker and the Anchor Pearl Choker bring the vocabulary of the sea to the neckline with considerable elegance.
The Blushing Shell Pearl Choker evokes a strong sense of delight and nostalgia.
For those whose story cannot be found among the existing collection, Cece offers something rarer still: the bespoke commission. Working directly with clients, the atelier transforms personal dreams, cherished memories and deeply held symbols into miniature works of art set into solid 18-carat gold signet rings and pendants. Commissions have been inspired by childhood imaginings, milestone birthdays, engagements, beloved animals, departed loved ones and places so freighted with meaning that no other medium could contain them.
One recent commission captures the spirit of the endeavour perfectly. A client wished to immortalise a particular pink door in London — not for its colour alone, but because that door marked the threshold of the house where her love story began, where her family took shape, where the most important chapter of her life unfolded. The result is a three-carat diamond ring with enamel side details that reproduce, with uncanny fidelity, that precise, unrepeatable shade of pink — a piece of jewellery that is also, in every meaningful sense, a portrait of a life.
An example of Cece’s atelier working with a client to create a bespoke piece.
Each hand-drawn design submitted by a client is interpreted and refined by Cece’s master enameller, working in the tradition of an art form that has changed little in a thousand years, transforming the personal into the permanent. These are heirlooms in the truest sense: objects made to outlast their first owner, to pass down through generations carrying their freight of memory intact. In the end, we all become stories, and Cece Jewellery simply ensures that yours is told in gold.
