In the world of culinary indulgence, there is one little treasure that is quite literally worth its weight in gold: the truffle. The Romans hailed them for their aphrodisiac qualities and today, chefs praise this small tuber for its unique taste and smell.

Piedmont is a land of mountains, surrounded on three sides by the Alps, with the highest peaks and largest glaciers in Italy. It is renowned for its contribution to food and wine, notably the white truffle – more delicate and aromatic than the more common black version - which grows between the roots of oak, hazel, poplar and beech trees near the city of Alba. For die-hard foodies, what could be better than truffle hunting in this wonderful region?

In celebration of the truffle season, which begins in the autumn and generally runs from the first week of September until mid-November, Hotel Principe di Savoia in Milan has launched a four day Truffle Tasting Package.

On their return, the hungry hunters will enjoy a three course lunch in the fabulous Osteria dell’Arco restaurant overlooking the hotel’s tranquil Italian garden, and indulge in a selection of traditional truffle-infused dishes. For those visiting on weekends between 11 October and 16 November 2014, the trip will also include a visit to the famous truffle market at the Alba International White Truffle Fair in Centro Storico.
