Handsome Somerset manor house
With paddocks and an orchard in its seven acres of grounds, this substantial country house in Drayton, Somerset, would make a perfect family base in the countryside

Drayton Manor is an extremely pretty Grade II listed manor house near Langport in Somerset. It is thought that there has been a dwelling on the site since the late 15th century, but the original house burnt down in the 1900s, leaving just part of the property still standing.
The house was rebuilt and now comprises an elegant, brick-built house under a tiled roof with creeper, wisteria and climbing roses decorating the exterior. Inside, the principal rooms face south and east: the dining room and drawing room are of particular note with large windows and graceful proportions. The kitchen/breakfast room lies at the heart of the house and makes a great family space.
Upstairs, the house currently offers four bedrooms, a dressing room, a study and three bathrooms but this is very flexible and there is further scope to reintegrate the second floor to create additional bedroom accommodation.
Accommodation in total comprises: entrance hall, dining room, drawing room, sitting room, kitchen/breakfast room, pantry and boot room; upstairs are the master bedroom suite, guest bedroom and three further bedrooms on the first floor, and attic space with lots of potential on the second floor.
Outside, the gardens are a major asset and include a wide sweeping lawn, beautiful areas of formal gardens, water features and a number of notable specimen trees. An area of orchard lies to the north of the house and there are some plantings in the paddock to the south – there are two paddocks which come with the house. A heated outdoor pool sits near the rear courtyard. The grounds come to around seven acres.
The house also comes with two cottages which lie to the south west which are currently let out but could be used for staff or guest accommodation.
Drayton Manor is located in Drayton village, just 12 miles from Taunton and 19 miles from Castle Cary. Drayton itself has a church, a good village hall and a pub.
