At Sedbergh we agree that the purpose of education is the making of the adult, the formation of the individual. More than that, it is equipping the individual to make him or herself. It is about learning to be yourself, and more than you thought you could be. This is the essence of Sedbergh.

Our pupils are presented with an unrivalled breadth of challenges as individuals and in teams. Set in the most spectacular of locations in the Howgill Fells on the boundary of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks, their collective response is a wholehearted embrace of these opportunities.

The same climate of confidence exists in our classrooms where teachers of the highest calibre act as intellectual role models rather than mere academic pathfinders. Intellectual challenge is coupled with courtesy so that every opinion is considered for what it is worth. We offer an extensive outreach programme and a dedicated Oxbridge scholars programme, and typically the School has numerous pupils in national orchestras as well as choirs.

Nine boarding Houses create the backbone of the school where our community is nurtured and values passed from one generation to the next. Sedberghians are proud of their identity and the intensity of experience that binds us together transforms achievement from a gift bestowed by others into a habit for life. This is how Sedberghians alter the trajectory of their lives. This is how we create a climate of success. This is what makes Sedbergh special.

Sally-Bowles

This academic year we have seen new and improved facilities such as a refurbished swimming pool and changing rooms, and brand new accommodation, dining and recreation spaces for our third girls’ boarding house which opened last year.

In September 2013, the prep school relocated to Casterton, just ten minutes drive away. The school, now the largest preparatory school in the North, is situated in a spectacular rural location, in the Lune Valley. This is an ideal location for living out the ethos of allowing children to be children. There is no rush to grow up here but the foundations are laid for nurturing the resilience our children will need as young adults, and the tenacity essential to achieving high standards.

Facilities at the new Prep school are first class and include floodlit Astro-turf, cricket nets and tennis courts, a theatre, heated indoor swimming pool and stables. Balancing the academic with outdoor learning, we are creating a school farm – pupils already consult with Chef to grow vegetables and herbs and this involvement is set to increase.

The Preparatory School has increased in size from a roll of 150 to 190 in the first 12 months. Flexi- or full boarding is possible.
