Anassa, the 'Queen of the Mediterranean'
Set on the beautiful and unspoilt northern coast of Cyprus, Anassa is a hotel that embodies all the classic charms of the island.
By the end of a long dark winter many of us find our thoughts turning towards sunnier shores, and the Mediterranean, with its natural beauty, cobalt-blue seas and abundance of cultural riches often tops the list. The island of Cyprus is a favourite amongst well-heeled globetrotters for its long season and excellent amenities, and those in the know often head straight to Anassa.
Located on the northwest coast of the island, near the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, Anassa — translated as Queen from the Ancient Greek — is affectionately known as ‘The Queen of the Mediterranean’. Comprising a collection of whitewashed low-rise buildings gently descending through fragrant gardens, swimming pools and shady enclaves down to the aquamarine waters of Chrysochou Bay, the hotel embodies all the classic charms of the region.
Founded in 1998, Anassa remains in the stewardship of the Michaelides family who carefully ensure that the hotel retains its unique sense of place which is inspired by the hills, shore, the sea and the flora and fauna which surround it. When you check in, your senses respond: from the fragrant citrus groves and the salty tang of the sea to the pink bougainvillea set against the clear blue sky, the smooth marble under your feet and the gentle rhythmic beat of the waves on the shore, you know you’ve arrived.
Designed to blend into its surroundings, the layout of Anassa feels like walking into a traditional Byzantine village — complete with its own church. The classical architecture features marble and stone buildings decorated with mosaics and frescos reflecting the island’s Cypriot, Greek and Roman heritage; handcrafted local furniture sits alongside contemporary features which effortlessly combine the old and the new.
Family, authenticity and connection are at the heart of Anassa, and guests enjoy complete privacy within their rooms, suites and residences, and a warm Cypriot welcome everywhere else. Anassa manages the rare feat of providing an idyllic romantic retreat for couples as well as fun-filled trips for families who come to make memories together; because of this Anassa also works perfectly for multi-generational groups.
The property has two sensational outdoor swimming pools and one pool indoors, while the secluded beach also boasts a state-of-the-art dive centre, a sailing centre and a watersports centre; other sports include tennis and padel, and hikers and boat trippers can explore the stunning Akamas National Park next door.
Meanwhile the much-loved Mythos Kids Club welcomes children of all ages to enjoy a wide range of activities, and a full babysitting service is available on request. Parents might want to take some me-time booking a treatment in the world-class Thalassa Spa, which offers therapies inspired by the bounty of the sea. Alternatively, guests can learn more about local culture by enjoying pottery lessons, a sound bath, a horse-riding trip or a wine-tasting hosted by local vintners.
Fantastic food is a huge part of the experience at Anassa; local flavours take centre stage as the gardens provide everything from fresh fruit to the delicious olives which pair perfectly with a sundowner. Meanwhile four restaurants offer everything from fine dining under the stars to a light bite by the pool.
And for 2026 the Michaelides family has invested over €10m to further elevate the look and feel of Anassa’s iconic main terrace, its junior suites and its villas, as well as its higher accommodation categories, alongside new guest experiences including a grill-led dining concept at the Amphora restaurant, celebrating exceptional ingredients, premium meats and fresh seafood.
Anassa has become a place for stepping outside of your everyday and connecting with loved ones in a place of natural beauty where things move at your own pace. Those who return there do so for its timeless luxury, exceptional service, and the peerless sights, smells and sounds of a Mediterranean paradise.
Find out more at Anassa's website, or follow them on Instagram, Facebook or Youtube. Early booking offer: receive 15% off select room categories until February 28.
