Charming Medieval Welsh House
An historic Welsh property with gardens, paddocks, cottages, cellars and loose boxes is listed Grade I

Formerly the chief residence of the Bishops of Llandaff, Mathern Palace had fallen into decay when it was saved in 1894 by H. Avray Tipping and the house has been renovated and restored over the years to create a wonderful residence with spacious accommodation in Wales, just a couple of miles from Chepstow.
Full of character, the Palace offers lots of period features including panelling, flagstone floors and beautiful fireplaces in the elegant reception rooms, in particular. A commercial kitchen is located on the ground floor, from where there is courtyard access. The cellars are reached from the ground floor.
The bedrooms are split into two wings: four bedrooms run off the main passageway from where a door opens onto a stone spiral staircase, which rises from the main reception hall to a further two bedrooms, one of which is a suite. Stairs lead down from this corridor to a summer room with a full panoramic leaded window with wonderful garden views.

Outside, the gardens are mainly laid to lawn and feature a good deal of mature and specimen trees. Features include topiary yew hedging to the east and a sunken rose garden. An area of orchard leads down to a pond and beyond here is the paddock which forms the boundary of the property. The courtyard features lots of old buildings for storage, and there are also old stone pigsties and a stable block with three loose boxes. The grounds come to just over seven acres.
Two stone cottages lie to the front of the house, one of which has begun the process of being converted; the other has four bedrooms, a sitting room, kitchen and storage.
